AAA

Photobucket

Following the steps of a rich algerian composer tradition, AAA (1931-2008) borned of both arabic & berberian origin, gained a huge notoriety composing scores for some of the most emblematic movies of the post colonialism era: Omar Gatlato, Inspector Tahar's Holiday, Mughamarat Batal... The "Algerian Maestro" as his following used to call him, remains a major personnality not only for his prominent 70's recordings, but also for embodying a certain vision of modern Algeria. From dreamy maghrebic pop instrumental to obscure desert folk, Ahmed Malek's works for films showcases a dive into a fascinating yet haunting music.

In 1977 the "Radiodiffusion-télévision algérienne" (RTA) offered the composer the opportunitty to compiled some of his best efforts on a scarce 2xLP record which today remains nearly impossible to trace down. We're proud to present you some of the finest tracks from the record along with rare material from the family archives. More than any, those picturehouse recordings selected here, are borrowing of mystery, hypnotism & blend of a beautiful melancolia.

Selected AAA songs are appearing on our CART004 release:
"Tikjda: Algerian Films & Television Recordings (1972 - 1979)"

ILLAIYARAAJA

Photobucket

Throughout the 70's and 80s, South Indian pop music was dominated by the style of
Illaiyaraaja. Not only did the talent of this super prolific composer outshine the
whole of the previous generation: it also overshadowed his contemporaries. Always
obsessed with renewal and experimentation, Illaiyaraaja both debunked and
sublimated a good deal of the Tamil folklore. His universal and all-embracing music
moved the intellectual elite as well as the common people, and it didn't take long
for him to be hailed as a major popular icon and favourite composer of the studios.
It was natural for him to develop close ties with film-makers, particularly with Mani Ratman. Perfectionist in the extreme, he had the knack of creating soundscapes
utterly in line with their perspectives. From moody atmospheres to morbid deliriums,
his works delineate a wide musical field strewn with oddities and startling pieces. As a great lover of European classical music, and a fervent admirer of J.S. Bach and
of many 19th century Russian and Czech composers, he did not hesitate to instil a
touch of Dvořák into the arrangements of Chittu Kuruvi. Illaiyaraaja’s enthusiasm for rock'n'roll, rhythm and blues, and his faithfulness to Viswanathan & Ramamoorthy’s legacy, ensured his soundtracks contributed to the unstoppable spread of Occidental pop music. Right from the start of the 80s, his compositions mutated under the influence of such giants as Giorgio Moroder, Quincy Jones and Prince, shattered by the arrival of drum-machines, keyboards and other sound samples. During the second half of the decade, this tendency gained ground and reached a peak as he sheared his music of any padding and went for the clockwork regularity of western rhythms. Thus were born some lean, mutant pop masterpieces.

Selected Illaiyaraaja songs are appearing on our CART003 release:
"Play That Beat Mr. Raja #1" (see "CATALOGUE" for details)

INTERNET 2

Photobucket

Internet2 is a musical project from Comte d’Urgell art collective in Barcelona. The project started as a woodwind amateur band with 3 players. After few concerts with the woodwind ensemble Carlos Carbonell continued playing alone with a mystical show using a giant cardboard piano he plays with his feet. The show is based on charming dancing, popular music cliches, and some technological-magical tricks.
He has also written a music manifesto about “the world of bands, and why you shouldn’t have a band”.
He is also actually preparing a new project called “Music, the musical” which will involve other dancers and singers. He played at  various gigs including Pompidou Art Center in Paris, Sonar festival, NME parties etc and shared the stage with Keiji Haino, El Guincho, Mahjongg, Bishi...

His art collective, Comte d’Urgell is a artistic duo who works with cheap 1€ shop office supplies to build installations and stories.

PTÔSE aka PTÔSE PRODUCTION (1978 / 1986)

Photobucket

Ptôse by Ptôse (2006 phone interview)

"In the beginning, even before the birth of PTÔSE we had fun making musical covers of horror movies from the thirties like "White Zombie", or French films from the fifties! The conditions were such that the result was each time a surprise. We used percussions on cardboard and toy instruments and above all a dubbing system realized with a microphone and two tape recorders (sometimes we made more than ten records and superposed them which created a specific sound texture very close to electronic ones)…
The very first PTÔSE PRODUCTION tape which was a primitive version of "BOULE (viens ici)!", was specially recorded as a birthday gift for the band "The Residents". We had just discovered their single "Satisfaction" and the LP "Meet The Residents"…
We did not think of recording more at that time but as they thanked us and encouraged us, this gave us the idea to launch a bigger and larger diffusion of our music and quickly we took part in the underground but yet international net of the independent tape producers.
The weirdest thing is that "The Residents" themselves amused themselves fooling journalists by making them listen to this French tape."

"Légère Altération" contains selected tracks recorded between 1978 & 1983.
All songs written, performed & recorded by Ptôse Production.
